Understanding Thru-Hiking in Europe
Thru-hiking is the most challenging and rewarding adventure that I have ever experienced. It's a demanding endeavor that requires planning, physical preparation, and determination. The hikes can range from a few days to a few weeks or even months depending on you and the trails you choose to take on. The sense of accomplishment felt when you complete a thru-hike is unlike any other. Not only have you conquered mountains and trekked countless miles, but you have also passed through towns and villages, interacted with people of different cultures and ate new and amazing food. The length of the hikes allow time for introspection, new ideas and promotes self-growth all while demanding the very best of yourself physically. They are truly life changing experiences.

Iconic Thru-Hiking Trails in Europe
1. The Camino de Santiago (Spain)

The Camino de Santiago (Frances Route) is a world famous pilgrimage route that traverses across the entire country of Spain. This was the first real long distance trek I completed and it changed my view of travel forever. For 30 days (or as many as you would like to do) I simply walked without another care in the world. The freedom I found in this journey allowed for much needed introspection and reflection. Meeting fellow travelers was an unexpected bonus and created bonds that I still hold today. As if this was not enough, I was also in Spain. I walked through vineyards, quaint villages, small cities, mountains and ate and drank like a king. What an adventure! Click below to learn more.
2. The GR20 (Corsica, France)
If you're seeking a true test of skill and endurance, the GR20 on Corsica is for you. Spanning 180 kilometers (112 miles), it is renowned for its rugged terrain, steep ascents, and stunning vistas.

The GR20 is a legendary long-distance hiking trail that traverses the heart of Corsica. Renowned for its rugged beauty and challenging terrain the GR20 is considered one of the hardest long distance hikes in Europe. While the GR20 is not for the faint of heart, the rewards are well worth the effort. You can see for miles out over the Mediterranean, eat Corsican foods, drink Corsican wine (pro tip, its Corsican not French, you'll make more friends acknowledging that) and leave with a great sense of accomplishment having conquered this beastly trail.
3. The Alta Via 1 (Dolomites, Italy)
For those craving dramatic mountain views, the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites is a must. This trail covers approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) through northern Italy’s stunning landscapes.

The Alta Via 1 is hands down one of the most spectacular trails I've completed. The beauty is so astounding that I really didn't know where to look. Too many options, it was sensory overload. Combine that with challenging terrain and amazing food and wine at the lodges, you've got yourself a trip to remember. Put it on your list!
Essential Tips for Thru-Hiking in Europe
Prepare Your Gear
Before you hit the trails, having the right gear is essential, but as I've learned on my adventures, less is more. Do not buy a huge pack! The bigger your bag the more things you'll bring that you don't need. Trust me, the lightest things you "have to have" become very heavy after a week on the trail. Study your route, weather, accommodations and pack accordingly.
Comfortable hiking boots to avoid blisters and discomfort spend some money on your boots! Your feet are the most important part of your body to protect on these adventures. Without them you'll be sitting in a lodge, not hiking.
Lightweight backpack with a hydration system for easy carrying. Try not to go any bigger than you absolutely need. I tend to get new packs often for specific trips. This will help make your hike more enjoyable and easier from the airport to the trail.
Weather-appropriate clothing, including moisture-wicking fabrics and top of the line weather gear. (don't skimp on this) Having the right gear gives you the confidence that no matter what the weather decides to do you are prepared.
Sun Protection Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, spf clothing

Plan Your Route and Stay
Research is crucial when planning your hike. Understand the terrain, trail markings, and distances between stops well before you begin. Some hikes are better winging it with with where to stay while others require specific and timely planning. There is no set system for all the hikes. Each vary from the environment and country that you are in. The beauty is that there is almost always some form of accommodation, usually with food and a shower. Study the route and plan accordingly.

Stay Hydrated and Well-Fed
Maintaining energy during long hikes is critical. Follow these tips to help:
Carry a hydration system or water bottles and drink plenty of fluids. Aim for at least 2-3 liters of water daily. It is not advisable to fill up your water in rivers or streams. Carry water purification tablets or a Life Straw if you choose to take the risk.
Pack high-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars. Having enough energy throughout the day can prevent exhaustion.
Eat Up When you Can most lodges offer half and full board. Half board is dinner and breakfast which is all you really need. You can usually find a stop for lunch along the way or bring a small picnic from the local markets. Make sure to eat a lot. Your body will be burning thousands of more calories than its used to. This time is a great opportunity to pig out. Try everything and anything! I also advise sampling the local beer and wine after a long day on the trail. Just don't sample too much, hiking hungover is not a good time.
