Iceland's Golden Circle; A Tour Worth Taking

Updated: Oct 18, 2024

The Golden Circle is a must when visiting Iceland. You can get there any way you like, but we took a tour bus that ended up being perfect. They allotted plenty of time at each stop, the bus was comfy and free of screaming children, win win. The ride out takes you though the Icelandic countryside full of horses and bright green agricultural land. It's quite beautiful and makes the long ride a bit more enjoyable.

Fridheimar Greenhouse

The first stop on the trip and a welcome one. This greenhouse utilizes geothermal heat to cultivate tomatoes and cucumbers in a sustainable and energy-efficient manner. You are taken on a tour the greenhouse, learn about the innovative farming techniques, and enjoy a delicious meal in the on-site restaurant. The restaurant specializes in tomato-based dishes, showcasing the fresh produce grown on-site. I even had a tomato beer!

Geysir

After Fridheimar, you stop at Geysir geothermal area. The Strokkur geysir shoots a column of water up to 30 meters (98 ft.) into the air every 4-8 minutes. Equally as impressive as Geysir is the surrounding area. Everywhere you look is like an abstract painting. Vibrant oranges, blues and purples litter the hills and rocks creating an other worldly like painting.

Gullfoss

The "Golden Falls" is the next stop on the tour.  It's a magnificent waterfall that flows over two levels before falling into the canyon below. Its power is beyond impressive and the contrast of the beautiful greenery surrounding the canyons edge is breathtaking.

Thingvellir National Park  is the last stop on the tour. The park is situated between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The only place in the world you can stand in two continents at the same time. The park is beautiful overlooking lava fields, glacial valleys and crystal clear lakes. If you're feeling really adventurous you can even snorkel between the tectonic plates.

The Golden Circle tour was well worth the time and money spent. I don't do a ton of tours but I would definitely recommend this one. For more Icelandic and other travel tips visit us at enlightened-adventures.com Happy Travels!!
